ITHACA COLLEGE AQUAPONICS
Environmental Science and Studies Department
About the Project
IC aquaponics is a collaborative research team of undergraduate students overseen by Professor Paula Turkon. From education and outreach, nutrition research, system mechanics and development, students engage in unique research opportunities to gain a better understanding of alternative agriculture.
How it Works
Aquaponics provides an alternative to traditional agricultural production, involving combined raising of plants and fish in the same system. The water accumulates nutrients as the fish produce waste, supporting the plants, which filter the water before it returns to the fish. Ideal aquaponics systems provide plants and fish for consumption with only a single nutritional input of fish food.
